Westwood was first settled in 1641 and was part of the town of Dedham, originally called 'West Dedham', until it was officially incorporated in 1897.It was the last town to split from the original town of Dedham.
It is largely residential in character, with 37 houses, most of which date from the 18th to the mid-19th centuries. The rural character of the area is captured by a number of preserved 19th-century barns. The district also includes Westwood Town Hall, a 1910 Classical Revival building, and the 1874 Second Empire Colburn School. [2]

Prior to 1821, the only recognized form of government in Massachusetts was the town meeting. On April 9, 1821, an amendment to the state constitution was approved that permitted municipalities to choose other forms of government. On February 23, 1822, the Governor approved an act that granted a city form of government to Boston.

Westwood High School (WHS) is a public high school in Westwood, Massachusetts, United States.Rebuilt in 2005, it is part of the Westwood Public Schools district. Amy Davenport is the Principal and WHS has two Assistant Principals, Aishleen Flanagan and Tom Millett.
