In 1914, with fellow teacher Mary T. Wales, she co-founded Johnson & Wales Business School in Providence, Rhode Island. [2] It has grown into the present-day Johnson & Wales University, with two campuses in the United States.
Mary Tiffany Wales was born in 1874 in Wilmington, Delaware. [1] She attended Pennsylvania State Normal School (now Millersville University of Pennsylvania) in Millersville, Pennsylvania, graduating 1893. [2] She spent five years teaching in Pennsylvania, then moved to Massachusetts where she taught for twelve years. [2]
A catalog from 1867 lists courses including surveying; civil engineering; navigation; and penmanship. [3] Also offered was a course on "Common English Studies", which included arithmetic, grammar, geography and other studies. [3] Students could study a basic level of Latin, Greek, French, and German.
