At the beginning of yet another good water year, Idaho finds a looming crisis | Opinion. Bryan Clark. May 31, 2024 at 6:00 AM. Idaho Department of Water Resources.
This year, the system has seen an 850,000-acre-foot increase in water flowing into the river from the aquifer, 300,000+ acre-feet in aquifer recharge, a 400-500 cubic-feet-per-second increase in ...
The dam was constructed as the principal feature of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's Palisades Project. The Palisades Project supplements the storage and power generation facilities of the earlier Minidoka and Michaud Flats projects, which serve irrigation interest in Idaho on the Snake River Plain, saving about 1,350,000 acre-feet (1.67 km 3) through the winter for use in the growing season.
Idaho is in the midst of an ongoing water crisis that threatens a key economic sector: agriculture. Though that crisis has been abated this year by a last-minute deal, it will return.
The water year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends, so the 2025 water year started on October 1, 2024, and will end on September 30, 2025. [ 1 ] One way to identify a water-year is to find the successive 12-month period that most consistently, year after year, gives the highest correlation between precipitation and streamflow ...
The Bureau of Reclamation proposed the Teton Dam in 1963 and Congress passed, without opposition, an authorizing bill the following year. The planned dam was to be an earthen structure 310 feet (94 m) high and 0.6 miles (1.0 km) long, creating a reservoir 17 miles (27 km) in length. The impounded water would be used to generate hydroelectric power.
The most vexing thing about this year’s massive curtailment was that if you live in eastern Idaho, you see water everywhere you look. There’s still snow in the mountains. The canals all look full.
The Bureau of Reclamation and Idaho Water Resource Board are working on raising the dam by six feet (1.8 m), resulting in approximately 29,000 acre-feet (35,800,000 m 3) of new storage space. [4] The design is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2024.
