Indiana was granted statehood near the end of 1816. The first non-indigenous settler in the future Fountain County is thought to have been a Mr. Forbes, who arrived in early 1823 and was soon followed by others. [8] The legislative act creating Fountain County was passed on December 30, 1825, setting an effective date of April 1, 1826.
Fountain County Courthouse was designed by Louis Johnson, and completed in July 1937. The construction of the building cost $228,822. It is a three-story, Art Deco style, flat roofed building faced with Indiana limestone. It measures 116 feet by 89 feet and incorporates a 32 foot-square wired-glass skylight.
Troy Township lies along the western side of Fountain County; the Wabash River defines the western borders of both. According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 44.44 square miles (115.1 km 2), of which 43.86 square miles (113.6 km 2) (or 98.69%) is land and 0.58 square miles (1.5 km 2) (or 1.31%) is water.
It contains the town of Kingman in the southwest along Indiana State Road 234. The unincorporated community of Centennial , with its cemetery of the same name, [ 5 ] lies to the northeast on U.S. Route 41 ; [ 6 ] further north, at the intersection with Indiana State Road 32 , [ 7 ] lies Steam Corner .
According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 51.94 square miles (134.5 km 2), all land. [3] It contains two incorporated towns: Newtown, with a population of about 250, lies near the center of the township; Mellott, with about 200 people, is about 2 miles (3.2 km) south.
