The Tuscaloosa metropolitan area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of four counties in west central Alabama, anchored by the city of Tuscaloosa. As of the 2020 census , the MSA had a population of 268,674.
Tuscaloosa is the regional center of industry, commerce, healthcare and education for the area of west-central Alabama known as West Alabama. It is the principal city of the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area , which includes Tuscaloosa, Hale and Pickens counties.
Tuscaloosa County is part of the Tuscaloosa, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area, which also includes Hale and Pickens counties. The community gained international attention in 1993 when it landed Mercedes-Benz 's first North American assembly plant, and as of 2021, the company employs over 4,000 people at the facility.
The average land area is 756 sq mi (1,958 km 2). The largest county is Baldwin (1,590 sq mi, 4,118 km 2) and the smallest is Etowah (535 sq mi, 1,386 km 2). [8] The Constitution of Alabama requires that any new county in Alabama cover at least 600 square miles (1,600 km 2) in area, effectively limiting the creation of new counties in the state. [9]
