Inverness is a town in Sunflower County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 868 at the 2020 census. [3] As the town had the largest cotton gin in the Mississippi Delta, it served as a gathering place for farmers from the region when they brought their cotton for processing. The town was heavily damaged by a tornado in 1971.
Poindexter was elected Mayor of Inverness, Mississippi, in 1971, and became the youngest person elected to that office in town history. [1] After his tenure ended, Poindexter was elected to represent the 13th district (Sunflower County) in the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1975 for the 1976–1980 term.

On the afternoon of Sunday, February 21, 1971, a deadly and long-tracked F5 tornado impacted the Mississippi Delta, killing 48 and injuring over 500.The tornado was the strongest tornado of the 1971 Mississippi Delta tornado outbreak, and second deadliest behind a later F4 tornado the same day.
