The Battery remained here until the end of May 1863, when they left to garrison Fort Ramsey and Fort Buffalo near Upton Hill, VA (east of Falls Church, VA). By June, they returned to Washington. [1] [2] His brother Samuel Galt Birnie (1875–1938) was a prominent attorney in Philadelphia. [2] [3] His uncle Rogers Birnie (1851–1939) was a career U.S. Army officer who retired as a colonel.
