The musical opened at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California, on 1 July 1992.The Broadway theatre debut was at the St. James Theatre on 29 March 1993 with 27 previews running through 10 April.
The musical began development in 2008 and premiered in September 2012 in San Diego, California. It played on Broadway from October 2015 to February 2016. [1] Reviews on Broadway were mixed, although the cast was generally praised. [2] Further productions were mounted in Los Angeles in 2018 and London in 2023.
In July 2023, a pre-Broadway workshop was held in New York City. [8] In November 2023, it was announced that the show would open on Broadway in the Spring of 2024. The show began previews on March 29, 2024, and officially opened on April 22 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. [1] The Broadway cast was announced in January 2024.
The San Diego run was followed by a Sarasota, Florida, engagement in 2010. The musical debuted on Broadway in December 2011. It was nominated for three Outer Critics Circle Awards and five Drama Desk Awards, both including Best New Musical, as well as two nominations for the 2012 Tony Awards .
After having record-breaking runs at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California, the Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2015, the Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., and the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto in 2016, [1] it opened on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 12, 2017 and became a critical and box office success.

Premiering at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, the production was moved to Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in 1997. The later production received three nominations at the 51st Tony Awards including for lead performances for both Tonya Pinkins and André De Shields and for Best Orchestrations to Luther Henderson. The original Broadway cast recording was released digitally by Masterworks Broadway/Sony Masterworks on May 22, 2024, followed by physical CD and Vinyl releases on June 28 and August 9 respectively. The album ranked number 1 on the Billboard Cast Albums chart for the week of July 27, 2024.
