The Trans-Hudson orogeny or Trans-Hudsonian orogeny was the major mountain building event that formed the Precambrian Canadian Shield and the North American Craton (also called Laurentia), forging the initial North American continent.
Trans-Hudson orogeny, also known as Hudsonian orogeny – Mountain-building event in North America – Extends from Hudson Bay west into Saskatchewan then south through the western Dakotas and Nebraska. Result of the collision of the Superior craton with the Hearne craton and the Wyoming craton, during the Proterozoic Eon (2000–1800 Ma)
Three orogenies formed the Precambrian shield, the Kenoran (Laurentian-Algoman), Hudsonian (Penokean) and Grenville Orogeny. [5] [6] [7] Between 2.2 and 2.5 billion years ago was the Kenoran Orogeny, which was overlain by the Hudsonian Orogeny 1700 to 1900 million years ago.
The Churchill Province is situated inland in north-central Labrador and was deformed during the Hudsonian orogeny. Anorthosite intrusions partly obscure it in places, but a mylonite zone marks it northern boundary.
Geological map of north-western Canada. Snowbird Tectonic Zone marked F. The Snowbird Tectonic Zone (STZ) is a geological structure in the western Canadian Shield which forms a geophysical boundary between the Hearne Craton and the south-west arm of the Rae Craton. [1]
The Bravo Lake Formation is a mafic volcanic belt and large igneous province [1] located at the northern margin of the Trans-Hudson orogeny on central Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. It is exposed along a nearly continuous east–west passage for 120 km (75 mi) and changes in stratigraphic thickness from 1 to 2.5 kilometers. [2]
