Together, they drove to Dorothy Kilgallen's place, and each pulled a gun from the bag. Arlene picked the lock to the front door and Peggy kicked open Dorothy's bedroom door.
September 2, 2020 2:37 AM. R3, she was disliked in part because, unlike her liberal co-panelists, she was a right-winger. And she was not killed, she died of an overdose. A hack sports talk show host in my town had heard the Kennedy connection to her death, but got it a bit confused & said JFK had her killed.
Koethe died September 21, 1964. Kilgallen died November 8, 1965. Florence Pritchett, a friend of Dorothy's and fellow journalist on the “Journal-American,” died eight hours after Dorothy's body was found. She died of cerebral hemorrhage following a three-month bout with leukemia.
Dorothy was not being a snob. She was making a point that she was a woman who did not feel obliged to follow mid-century expectations for what women were to do. She was not harking back to the servant/leisure-class arrangement. She was looking ahead to the future when a woman was not necessarily a housewife.
"The exception to this was Dorothy Kilgallen. Here's what Bennett Cerf had to say about it: "'Another thing that infuriated us with Dorothy Kilgallen were the mystery guests. Sometimes they would have a very famous person on. Well, the audience wanted to see that mystery guest and him or her play the game for a bit with us.
[quote] Frank Sinatra, at the final Cal Neva concert on 5th September 1963, said as an aside to the audience, "If you see Dorothy Kilgallen when you're driving a car, run her over." Sinatra and Kilgallen used to be on friendly terms. Kilgallen wrote an article about Sinatra which was published across the US by Hearst newspapers.
Dorothy is no beauty, but she's not repulsive, either. She probably mothered Johnnie and made him feel protected and loved - plus they were probably both drunk as skunks when he fathered Kerry. If you read Ray's bio at Wikipedia, it seems he remained emotionally attached to her and was deeply upset by her death.
In the final "Road" movie, "The Road to Hong Kong" (1962), Dorothy Lamour was reduced to a cameo, and Joan Collins played the traditional Dorothy Lamour role. Crosby thought that Lamour was too old to be the leading lady at 48, but Hope refused to do the movie without her. The cameo was a compromise.
Dorothy Kilgallen attended a preview performance—a benefit for charity—on October 21, 1965. Despite a theater critics' tradition of refraining from reviewing preview performances of Broadway shows, Kilgallen expressed her opinion of Skyscraper in her column as it appeared in the New York Journal-American. The quote given in R306 is from her.
Dorothy on TTTT. She did not fit in. So I don't think the other members of the To Tell the Truth panel liked Dorothy Kilgallen either. I really liked Dina Merrill on any show she participated on. If it was a guest, on TTTT, that involved something of culture or the upper class she would grill them.
