The park includes nearly 20,000 acres (8,100 ha) in a strip along the Potomac River. A small portion of the towpath near Harpers Ferry National Historical Park doubles as a section of the Appalachian Trail. The southern end of the ridge, which is part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, is known as Maryland Heights.
