SS Ohio was an iron passenger-cargo steamship built by William Cramp & Sons in 1872. The second of a series of four Pennsylvania-class vessels, Ohio and her three sister ships—Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois—were the largest iron ships ever built in the United States at the time of their construction, [1] and amongst the first to be fitted with compound steam engines.
They went on to build an additional 30 ships for the USSB [2] (including 8 Design 1020 ships). After World War I, due to a post-war glut of ships, they focused on repair work. [2] They returned to shipbuilding in 1920 and launched 14 ships through 1930. [2] During the Great Depression, they returned to ship repair. [2]

[1] Her hull was 202.2 feet (61.6 m) long, her beam was 35 feet (11 m) wide and her cargo hold was 18.50 feet (5.64 m) deep.

USS Cleveland (LPD-7), an Austin-class amphibious transport dock, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for the city in Ohio. Her keel was laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, Mississippi. She was launched on 7 May 1966, and was commissioned on 21 April 1967 at Norfolk, Virginia.
Original plans called for Ohio to be retired in 2002. Instead, Ohio and three sister boats were modified and remain in service as cruise missile submarines . In November 2002 Ohio entered drydock, beginning a 36-month refueling and conversion overhaul. Electric Boat announced on 9 January 2006 that the conversion had been completed. [6]

The initial order of littoral combat ships involved a total of four ships, including two of the Freedom-class design. [7] Cleveland is the sixteenth Freedom-class littoral combat ship to be built. Marinette Marine was awarded the contract to build the ship on 15 January 2019. [1] Cleveland was launched on 14 April 2023.
