Harborough District Council is based at the Symington Building, located in the centre of Market Harborough. The building was originally a corset factory, built in 1884. [ 17 ] The council purchased the building in 1980 and converted it to become its offices and meeting place, as well as providing a new library for the town. [ 18 ]
There are two tiers of local government covering Market Harborough, at district and county level: Harborough District Council and Leicestershire County Council. The district council has its offices at the Symington Building, a former corset factory, in the town centre. The town is an unparished area and therefore has no parish council. [2]
After significant population growth, partly due to its status as a market town, the area became an urban district with the town hall in 1894. [7] However, the assembly rooms in the town hall were seldom used for civic purposes, [8] particularly after the council established permanent offices on Northampton Road shortly after the First World War.

Little Bowden remained a civil parish until 1927, but as an urban parish it had no parish council of its own, instead being administered directly by Market Harborough Urban District Council. In 1921 the parish had a population of 2,768. The three parishes within the urban district were combined into a single parish of Market Harborough in 1927. [1]
