Clover Bottom Mansion occupies land on the Stones River first claimed in 1780 by John Donelson, who abandoned his homestead following an Indian attack. [5] The mansion was built in 1859 and was the centerpiece of the 1,500-acre Clover Bottom Plantation [6] [3] incorporating portions of the house that had been built by the Hoggatts in 1853 and was destroyed by fire.
Fordson Island was created in 1918 by the Ford Motor Company. [3] [4] In order to create a shipping channel through which lake freighters carrying ore could access the company's River Rouge Complex, the River Rouge was dredged; [3] [4] straightening the channel of the river caused a small piece of land to be cut off, creating an island (which was donated to the city by Henry Ford).
