The 2019 NIRF ranking was released on 8 April 2019 in 9 categories: Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Law. [7] For the 2020 rankings, around 3,800 institutions participated in the process, a 20% increase over 2019. [8] The 2020 ranked lists were released by MHRD on 11 June 2020.
The state with the most universities is Gujarat with 97 universities, and Gujarat has also by far the most state private universities, 63 in number. [10] Tamil Nadu is the state with the most deemed universities, numbering 28, [ 8 ] and Karnataka has the most state universities, 42. [ 5 ]
The University of Calcutta was the first multi-disciplinary university of modern India. According to The Times Higher Education Supplement's survey of the world's top arts and humanities universities, dated 10 November 2005, this university, ranked 39, was the only Indian university to make it to the top 50 list in that year.

The types of universities controlled by the UGC include Central universities, [3] [4] State universities, [5] Deemed universities [6] and Private universities [7] In addition to the above universities, other institutions are granted the permission to autonomously award degrees, and while not called "university" by name, act as such.
As of 14 November 2023, the UGC lists 124 institutes which were granted the deemed to be university status. [2] In 2017, a distinct category of deemed universities was established called Institutes of Eminence Deemed to be Universities, which are regulated differently from other deemed universities to develop into world-class institutions.
