AWB is a semi-automatic wiki-editor created to edit Wikipedia and other wikis hosted with the MediaWiki software. Among other things, AWB is designed to perform search & replace instructions provided by the user, upon a list of pages it assists the user in making.
AWB is not installed on the PC and runs mostly as a standalone application: AutoWikiBrowser.exe (the provided WikiFunctions.dll file is also required). AWB can be unzipped to any directory; however, on some machines there can be permissions problems that stop AWB working correctly if the directory used is on a network drive.
The AWB manual is not completely maintained by the AWB development team. The developers simply add new features, and find and fix bugs. Their energy is better spent with dealing with the software then to writing the documentation. Therefore, it relies on Wikipedia AWB software users to help maintain the manual.
PyAutoWikiBrowser (PyAWB) is an editing assist tool for MediaWiki similar to AWB, but since it is written in Python, it is intended to be cross-platform. Currently it is under development, but it is available for testing as a command line tool.
