The charging station puts 12 V on the Control Pilot (CP) and the Proximity Pilot (AKA Plug Present: PP) measuring the voltage differences. This protocol does not require integrated circuits, which would be required for other charging protocols, making the SAE J1772 robust and operable through a temperature range of −40 °C to +85 °C.
J1772 has a maximum output of 19.2 kW. [ 9 ] In North America, the same Type 2 physical connector is used for three-phase AC charging under the SAE J3068 standard, which uses Local Interconnect Network (LIN) for control signaling based on IEC 61851-1 Edition 3 Annex D. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] J3068 increases the maximum output to 166 kW using three-phase AC.
Proximity pilot (PP): pre-insertion signalling; Control pilot (CP): post-insertion signalling; Protective earth (PE): full-current protective earthing system; Communication takes place over the CP/PP signalling pins between the charger, cable, and vehicle to ensure that the highest common denominator of voltage and current is selected.
The PP, or Proximity Pilot, pin carries a low-voltage signal and is used to determine the status of the vehicle connector. When the button on the plug is depressed to unlock the connector, a switch on the Proximity Pilot circuit is opened, stopping the flow of electricity. Pin usage is the same as the SAE J1772 connector when used for AC ...

On J1772 there is no "Proximity Pilot". There is a "Control Pilot" and a "Proximity". Confusingly, "Proximity Pilot" is a distinct, third thing that is used on Type 2 / Mennekes connections for the (removable) cable to signal its current capacity upstream to the EVSE. E.g. so a 16-amp rated cable plugged in to a 32 amp EVSE won't get overloaded.
