[3] Louisville ultimately purchased the old estate for $297,500 in 1904 (equivalent to $10,088,555.56 in 2023). The DuPonts had made contingency plans for a public park on their property as early as 1883.

The land that is today St. James and Belgravia was at one time used for truck-farming and by 1875 became the site of a baseball park. [4] The land was later cleared, buildings were erected, and it hosted the Southern Exposition from 1883 to 1887. [5] The exhibition was held on 23 acres of open land south of Central Park.
The Southern Exposition was a five-year series of world's fairs held in Louisville, Kentucky, from 1883 to 1887 in what is now Louisville's Old Louisville neighborhood. The exposition, held for 100 days each year on 45 acres (180,000 m 2) immediately south of Central Park, which is now the St. James-Belgravia Historic District, was essentially an industrial and mercantile show.
