Scotland County is a county located in the southern part of the U.S. state of North Carolina.Its county seat is and largest community is Laurinburg.The county was formed in 1899 from part of Richmond County and named in honor of the Scottish settlers who occupied the area in the 1700s.
The name was originally spelled Laurinburgh and pronounced the same as Edinburgh, though the "h" was later dropped. [7] The community was initially located within the jurisdiction of Richmond County. [8] In 1840, Laurinburg had a saloon, a store, and a few shacks. Laurinburg High School, a private school, was established in 1852.
