Mesaieed was established in 1949 as a tanker terminal by QatarEnergy on a previously uninhabited site along the coast. It was chosen by the company because of its proximity to the working population in Doha and Al Wakrah and because of the depth of its waters. [5]
After modernization and expansion works the smelter's capacity rose to 450,000 ton in 1992. In March 2005, Alba commissioned a new reduction line, Line 5, which increased the company's capacity to over 860,000 ton of aluminum at that time. Today, thanks to its newly inaugurated Line 6, Alba's production capacity is beyond 1.62 MTPA. [5]
