The county was created in 1876 and organized in 1889. [3] It is named for Sidney Sherman, who fought in the Texas Revolution. Though both Sherman County and Sherman, Texas, are named for the same person, the city of Sherman is located in Grayson County, about 430 miles to the southeast.

Texhoma is a city in northeastern Sherman County, Texas, United States. The population was 258 at the 2020 census, [5] declining from 364 in 2010. Texhoma is a divided city, with the Texas-Oklahoma state border separating the city from Texhoma, Oklahoma. It is also the northernmost settlement in the entire state of Texas.
The Sherman–Denison MSA is a component of the Dallas-Ft. Worth combined statistical area, which covers a 19-county area and had an estimated population of 8,057,796 as of July 1, 2009. [3] It is also a major part of the Texoma region with proximity to both Lake Texoma and the Red River .
Stratford is at the intersection of US Routes 54 and 287, and is the western terminus of Texas State Highway 15. [ 7 ] The nearest major airport, Liberal Mid-America Regional Airport , is 82 miles and two states away in Liberal, Kansas , although Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport is only slightly further away, at 91 miles.
