The Philbrook Farm Inn stands in a rural area in eastern Shelburne, on the north side of North Road overlooking the flood plains of the Androscoggin River to the south, as well as portions of the White Mountains. The main building of the inn is a rambling 2-1/2 story wood-frame structure, consisting of a c. 1834 farmhouse with numerous additions.
It abuts the property of the Shelburne Museum to the southwest. It is about 74 acres (30 ha) in size, and includes how many historic buildings. The oldest surviving building in the district is the 1796 Shelburne Inn, and Federal style houses are scattered throughout the village.
When the Shelburne Museum dismantled and reassembled the Stagecoach Inn on the grounds in 1949, it needed restoration. Museum contractors removed the dividing walls in the second-story ballroom, returning it to its former dimensions; they rebuilt ten fireplaces, two brick ovens, and two ham-smoking chambers; applied paneling and plaster finishes that approximated those found in New England in ...
