Given the restrictions on the axle load and the use of only a single lane at a time, a new bridge, the Rusumo International Bridge, adjacent to the single lane bridge, was opened in 2014 to cope with expected increase of the traffic volume between Rwanda and Tanzania in the coming years.
Rusumo is located in the southern part of Eastern Province, at the international border with Tanzania, [1] approximately 83 kilometres (52 mi), southeast of Rwamagana, the location of the provincial headquarters. [2] This is approximately 136 kilometres (85 mi), by road, southeast of Kigali, the capital and largest city in Rwanda. [3]
