In modern archery, a compound bow is a bow that uses a levering system, usually of cables and pulleys, to bend the limbs. [1] The compound bow was first developed in 1966 by Holless Wilbur Allen in North Kansas City, Missouri, and a US patent was granted in 1969. Compound bows are widely used in target practice and hunting.

Allen was born July 12, 1909, in Stilwell, Kansas.In the 1960s, he sawed the ends off a conventional recurve bow and then added pulleys to each end. [1] Allen experimented with a number of designs to apply for a patent on June 23, 1966, [2] and U.S. patent 3,486,495 was granted to him in December 1969.
This limb stiffness makes the compound bow more energy-efficient than other bows, in conjunction with the pulley/cams.
