Cardinal Ritter Prep opened on September 6, 1979. It is named for Cardinal Joseph Ritter, Archbishop of St. Louis in the mid-20th century. From 1977–1978, a community representative task force was established by the Board of Catholic Education of the St. Louis Archdiocese to study the future existence of a Catholic school in the old Labouré location in North St. Louis.
For its first 25 years, TJ was a boarding and day school for boys in grades 9–12. In the 1950s, it was a feeder school for Harvard. [citation needed] The school became coeducational in 1971. During the 1970s, the school also began admitting students as five-day boarders. The school added an eighth grade in 1976 and a seventh grade in 1981.

Villa Duchesne is also well known for its field hockey program, and the St. Joseph's vs. Villa Duchesne field hockey game is a popular rivalry game. In 2011, Villa Duchesne captured the Missouri Class 3A Volleyball Championship led by a core group of seniors who helped the team to a 2nd-place finish in 2009.
