This list of birds of Delaware includes species credibly documented in the U.S. state of Delaware and accepted by the Delaware Bird Records Committee (DBRC). As of August 2021 there were 427 species on the official list. [ 1 ]
It was established by President John F. Kennedy [2] in 1963 on 10,000 acres (40 km 2) along the western shore of Delaware Bay. The refuge contains a variety of habitats, including freshwater and salt marshes, woodlands, grasslands, ponds, and forested areas, supporting 267 species of birds and a variety of reptiles, amphibians and mammals. [3]
Delaware Bay is also the second largest staging area for spring migratory shorebirds in North America. The list of birds recorded at the refuge is very large, with nearly 350 species, including "accidental" migrants. [citation needed] As of 2009, eBird has recorded 302 species of birds in Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. [3]
The northern cardinal is the state bird of seven states, followed by the western meadowlark as the state bird of six states. The District of Columbia designated a district bird in 1938. [4] Of the five inhabited territories of the United States, American Samoa and Puerto Rico are the only ones without territorial birds.
