XACML separates access control functionality into several components. Each operating environment in which access control is used has a Policy Enforcement Point (PEP) which implements the functionality to demand authorization and to grant or deny access to resources.
The PEP or Policy Enforcement Point: it is responsible for protecting the apps & data you want to apply ABAC to. The PEP inspects the request and generates an authorization request from which it sends to the PDP. The PDP or Policy Decision Point is the brain of the architecture.
XACML, the eXtensible Access Control Markup Language, uses XML as its main encoding language. Writing XACML policies directly in XACML leads to bloated, human-unfriendly text, [3] therefore a new, more lightweight, notation was necessary. Axiomatics researcher, Pablo Giambiagi, therefore designed ALFA, the Axiomatics Language for Authorization.
