South Lyon was founded in 1832 and was called Thompson's Corners. In the same year, the surrounding township was named Lyon after Lucius Lyon, a member of the state legislature. The Portsmouth Lodge No. 104 was chartered the following year. Lodge members soon voted to move to Bay City, and the name changed to Bay Lodge No. 104 in 1869.
