The park has many ancient blue oak trees that range from 400 to 500 years old. Vegetation in the area is 50 percent interior live oak, 25 percent blue oak, 14 percent annual grassland, 5 percent cottonwood/willow riparian, freshwater marsh and seasonal wetlands, and less than 5 acres of vernal pools. Birdwatching is a year-round activity.

Fed by the Lake Fork Arm of the Gunnison River, Soap Creek, and Cebolla Creek, the long, broad lake is 20 miles (32 km) long, has 96 miles (154 km) of shoreline, and is the largest Lake Trout and Kokanee salmon fishery in the United States.

To the left is a campground loop, originally built as a picnic area by the CCC. To the right is a second, larger campground loop, which includes day use facilities near the ranger's house at the northern end. [2] The campground has a total of 62 tent/RV sites and 17 lean-tos. Between the entry and the river is the picnic area, with a group camping area just to its south. The contact station and ranger residence is just to its north, separated from the highway by a grassy area. It also includes handicapped restroom facilities. North of the contact station is the campground, with 15 campsites, 4 cabins, and 6 leantos.
