Hess was born in Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1923. The second of nine children, he was raised in Anadarko by Catholic parents. He briefly attended St. Patrick's Indian Mission School as one of a few white students in his class, an experience that left a lasting impression. Gaylord came to Oklahoma City in December 1902 and bought an interest in The Daily Oklahoman, which had been founded in 1889. [2] He became the paper's business manager in January 1903. [2] Gaylord married Inez Kinney of New York City in 1914. [1] In 1918, he became president of OPUBCO, the newspaper's parent company. [2]
