Lajitas is located on the eastern end of the Big Bend Ranch State Park. Big Bend Ranch State Park is a 311,000-acre (126,000 ha) state park located on the Rio Grande in Brewster and Presidio counties, Texas. It is the largest state park in Texas. The closest major town is Presidio, Texas. [2] The state park's head office is located in Lajitas, Texas at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center. [2] It includes Colorado Canyon.
Its only school, Big Bend High School, is located adjacent to the Study Butte census-designated place, and with a Terlingua postal address. [1] The district, which also serves Lajitas, [2] has one school — Big Bend High School, for grades K-12.
The center was built in 1982 by the Lajitas Foundation and was known as the Lajitas Museum Desert Gardens. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department purchased the center in October 1990 and named it after Barton Holland Warnock (1911–1998), an American botanist and leading authority on flora of the Trans-Pecos area and northern Chihuahuan Desert.
