It extends north from the right banks [note 2] of the river Beas, and reaches as far north as left bank of the river Ravi, constituting upper half of the Bari Doab. [2] The Majha region was partitioned between India and Pakistan in 1947. It includes four districts of Indian state of Punjab — Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot.
Punjab grew out of the settlements along the five rivers, which served as an important route to the Near East as early as the ancient Indus Valley civilization, dating back to 3000 BCE, followed by migrations of the Indo-Aryan peoples. Agriculture has been the chief economic feature of the Punjab and formed the foundation of Punjabi culture.
The term "Punjab" came into currency during the reign of Akbar in the late sixteenth century. Foundation as a town In 1794, the town of Muzaffargarh was founded by governor of Multan , Nawab Muzaffar Khan , who was also the Governor of Multan at the time. [ 5 ] The meaning of the word is "Fort of Muzaffar" because the "historic district" lies within the walls of a fort built by the governor.
