When editing, you'll see your reference next to the text; but after saving, readers will only see a reference number there; your reference should appear below. Good luck! If you get a warning about a missing "References" section at the end of the page, just add it:
==References== {{reflist}} Note: This is by far the most popular system for inline citations, but sometimes you will find other styles being used in an article. This is acceptable, and you shouldn't change it or mix styles. To add a new reference, just copy and modify an existing one.
References appear at the bottom of the article in a nicely rendered list. This is sometimes called the notes, footnotes, bibliography or citations. However the reference itself is embedded in the text using the tags, <ref>freetext</ref>. It goes immediately after the punctuation without a space.
This is usually displayed as a superscript footnote number: [1] The second necessary part of the citation or reference is the list of full references, which provides complete, formatted detail about the source, so that anyone reading the article can find it and verify it. This page explains how to place and format both parts of the citation.
External links and references are two important elements of Wikipedia that newcomers sometimes find trouble with. This page is designed to cover only the technical aspects of linking and referencing; it is essential that editors also familiarize themselves with Wikipedia:External links, Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Citing sources, as well as Wikipedia's various other policies ...
The easiest way to start citing on Wikipedia is to see a basic example. The example here will show you how to cite a newspaper article using the {} template (see Citation quick reference for other types of citations). Copy and paste the following immediately after what you want to reference:
Copy and paste the text under "common usage" to use the template. Following each example is the resulting article text. For a list of tools that can help create some of the templates below, see: Wikipedia:Citation tools. Citations are commonly embedded in reference templates. For more information, see: Wikipedia:Footnotes.
Copy and remove (cut) the entire {} template with the list of references. Install the References segregator tool and click the "Segregate refs for editing" button. Remove all the empty <ref> tags from the lower text box. Paste the list of references into the lower text box (after its existing contents).
