Southwest changed its name to Pacific Air Lines and operated Martin 4-0-4s and Fairchild F-27s to Santa Maria in the 1960s. Pacific merged with Bonanza Air Lines and West Coast Airlines to form Air West in 1968, which became Hughes Airwest in 1970. Hughes Airwest then served Santa Maria with McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30s and Fairchild F-27s. [10]
Aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss retired from aircraft development and manufacturing in the 1920s and became a real estate developer in Florida. In 1926, he founded the city of Opa-locka, naming it Opa-tisha-woka-locka (quickly shortened to Opa-locka), a Native American name that translates into the high land north of the little river with a camping place.

For many years it was the only all-weather airport between Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Los Angeles, California. In 1930 TAT merged with Western Air Express and the new carrier became Trans Continental and Western Air, or TWA. Ford Trimotor aircraft were first used followed by the Douglas DC-2 in 1934 and the Douglas DC-3 in 1937.
