A film based on DC Comics superhero Superman was developed by Warner Bros. for two years, with Burton directing. Smith, Strick and Gilroy wrote scripts; Cage was hired to play Superman. Filming was scheduled to begin in early 1998 but was repeatedly pushed back. The studio had spent $30 million on the film by the time it was cancelled in 1998.
