James Bennett McCord (April 5, 1870 – October 5, 1950) was an American medical missionary and physician who founded the McCord Zulu Hospital and spent over three decades treating mostly African, Native, and mixed race patients in Durban, South Africa.
The first mission in Africa was the South African Mission, originally organized in 1851. This became the South Africa Cape Town and South Africa Johannesburg missions in 1985. Later, the South Africa Durban Mission was created from portions of these missions as well as other regions in southern Africa.
The Botswana Namibia Mission was created July 2013. [7] [8] In November 2022, the LDS Church announced creation of the South Africa Pretoria Mission in July 2023. The mission consists of the South Africa portion of the Botswana-Namibia Mission as well as a portion of the South Africa Durban Mission.

Once the site of estates built by nineteenth-century mining magnates and financiers, the area around the temple now features hospitals, office buildings, and schools, many of which are housed in mansions from the Victorian era.
