The lower field of the stone is almost completely filled with the image of a longship with tall aft and stern. The sail is almost as wide as the ship is long. According to NEARA, the stone was discovered by a quahogger in December 1984 while digging in the mud flats of Narragansett Bay. [8] The HPHC was unable to find any information about the stone in any previous inventories of Narragansett Bay. They found that as early as 1939, the runestone was located upland and may have been buried. [3]
The stone is made of an irregular slab of slate. It is 2.15m tall, up to 1.25m wide and 8–13 cm thick. The artwork on the front of the stone is in Ringerike style, and depicts ribbons, leaves and a stylized animal, allegedly a lion.
