José Gabriel Severino (born 1 April 1974), [1] better known by his stage name El Jeffrey, is a merengue artist from the Dominican Republic. [2] A major album of his is "Mi Vida". El Jeffrey first became a household name with the 80's merengue group La Artillería.
The group has shared the stage with artists such as 50 Cent, LeAnn Rimes, Celia Cruz, Marc Anthony, Fat Joe, Johnny Ventura, Wilfrido Vargas, Tito Puente, El Gran Combo and The Temptations. Currently, Raul Acosta and Oro Solido are celebrating their 20th anniversary and are touring across the United States, Central, and South America.
The origins of the music are traced to the land of El Cibao, where merengue cibaeño and merengue típico are the terms most musicians use to refer to classical merengue. The word Cibao was a native name for the island, although the Spanish used it in their conquest to refer to a specific part of the island, the highest mountainous range.
