Ishpeming (/ ˈ ɪ ʃ p ə m ɪ ŋ / ISH-pə-ming) is a city in Marquette County, Michigan, United States. Located in the Upper Peninsula , the population was 6,140 at the 2020 census , [ 2 ] less than it was in the 1950s and 1960s when the Iron ore mines employed more workers.
The community became known as a "Model Town", a trace of which remains in the name for the local high school sports teams: the "Modeltowners". [9] It received a post office in 1908. By 1873, the city of Ishpeming was incorporated. In 1874, a disastrous fire destroyed most of the buildings in the Main Street district. New buildings, primarily of brick and stone, were constructed in the next few years to replace the lost buildings. [2] Ishpeming boomed in the 1880s, and continued to expand until the turn of the century.

It is 37 miles (60 km) west of Marquette, the county seat, 23 miles (37 km) west of Ishpeming, and 22 miles (35 km) east of Covington. The community sits on the north side of Lake Michigamme, drained to the south by the Michigamme River , part of the Menominee River watershed leading to Green Bay on Lake Michigan .
