The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (/ ˈ ʃ ɒ n t ɪ k l ɪər /, SHON-tih-clear [2]) are the athletic teams that represent Coastal Carolina University.They participate in Division I of the NCAA as a member of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) in most sports, having joined that conference as a full but non-football member on July 1, 2016.
The 2021–22 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers men's basketball team represented Coastal Carolina University in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Chanticleers, led by 15th-year head coach Cliff Ellis , played their home games at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina as members of the Sun Belt Conference .
The site of the present-day campus, by now known as USC Coastal Carolina College, was chosen in 1960, on a plot of land between U.S. 501 and S.C. 544, on land owned by Burroughs Timber Company and International Paper. The campus' first building, later named the Edward M. Singleton Building, opened in 1963.
During the 2017 season, Moglia took a leave due to medical issues, [2] and was replaced by interim head coach Jamey Chadwell, who guided the Chanticleers to a 3–9 record in their first season of Sun Belt play. Coastal Carolina beceame bowl-eligible in 2018, [2] and Chadwell became the program's third head coach on January 18, 2019. [3]
Coastal Carolina's first season as a full FBS member was in 2017. In 2020, the team won a share of its first Sun Belt championship and made its first bowl appearance, a 37-34 defeat to rival Liberty in the Cure Bowl. Coastal won its first bowl game the following season, returning to the Cure Bowl and defeating Northern Illinois, 47-41.
