    Everything anyone comments is speculation at best. However, based on history, I doubt the badge will affect you if you stick to your current timeline. When new Eagle Scout-required merit badges or requirements have been introduced in the past, there has always been a grace period for those who will be affected the most.

    Meet with your counselor to complete "show" requirements. (3, 4, 5) - 1 hour. So, roughly 8 hours of work. If you did requirement a night (including sub-requirements), you could be finished with the merit badge in 2 weeks. 4 weeks would be leisurely. That said, I'm not siding with your father on this.

    Gardening, or some sort of agricultural badge. Being an Eagle Scout is about embodying the spirit of Scouting. Scouting is about developing those character traits in the scouts, yes, but it does so through an avenue focused on outdoor skills and an appreciation for the environment and nature.

    All of those you can fail at the activity and still get the badge. All 3 shooting sports have a performance requirement, the only merit badges that do. Meaning if you can’t develop enough skill to pass, no badge. It used to be that Insect study required you to collect and pin 150 insects - which was a nightmare. But it is much better now.
