Jul 17, 2022. #5. I own 2 EW M70's, buddies have several others. 300WSM and 25-06. Mine are Models made in USA, not Portugal. Solid rifles, accuracy in the 1 moa or better range. As noted above, hard to get a read as manufacturing location varies, but mostly I see and hear positives on all newer M70/FN made rifles.
Rifle- My sons rifle a Winchester 70 270 weatherby mag with a timney trigger conversion. Problem- trigger is stuck on fire and won't engage with in cocked or fired position. Observation- when cocked I noticed the firing pin (shroud part that sticks out the back when cocked) is shallower than my other rifles WITH factory triggers and exactly the ...
For .28 caliber, my recommendation is .280 AI 26" or longer barrel with the right twist for the bullet you are going to use. If you venture to a wildcat, I would take advantage of the 6.5 RPM case capacity or as-is. Peterson will be the brass soon. .25 caliber: .25-06AI. .26 caliber: 6.5 RPM. .27 caliber: 270 AI.
All of our model 70s are pretty decent shooters for being lightweight. 1 inch three shot groups with certain factory ammo or under 1 inch with handloads. Federal cheap powershock 130 grain are the cheapest and best shooting we have found. Ours don't seem to like hornady factory ammo and are closer to 2 inch groups.
Go with the Model 70. I just sold my X-Bolt and replaced with a mid 90's Classic Featherweight and I couldn't be happier. The X-Bolt was a heck of a shooter with a great trigger, but I just didn't like the way it fed or extracted. Half the time I would have to turn the rifle upside down to get the spent casing out of the action.
I wouldn't pick a Mod 70 to build an accurate rifle, but back in the day it was the go to for 1000 yard shooting. Not looking for per se a long ranger as I just had a 7mm PRC built complete custom. I would not mind accurizing a 264 win mag as I like a m70 and a 264 bullet is pretty for Whitetails. 1. 2.

Timnterra said: If I ever built a pre 64 into a modern performance rifle it would have to be in a 1-8"twist 270 Winchester or a new 1-10" twist 30-06 or an improved version of the two like a 30 or 270 Gibs. I couldn't go with a carbon wrapped barrel it would have to be a chromoly Krieger #3 or #4 with a high polished blued finish.
Drill down about 5/8 deep. This makes a semi-pillar when it is filled with glass. I remove the wood from the recoil lug mortise back to the hole to a depth equal to the bottom of the recoil lug mortise. From there, I angle up to the top of the magazine well.
6,379. Location. Australia, Victoria. Oct 4, 2024. #2. All of the Portuguese assembled Model 70's I bought recently have all been professionally bedded by me, trued and made into switch barrel rifles. Not one had anything in the action screw holes or on the screws other than a small white/cream coloured glue.
