The Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) is a scoring system to assess the symptoms associated with Crohn's disease. It assigns a score based on eight clinical factors, including overall well-being, frequency of loose stools, abdominal pain, presence of abdominal masses, changes in weight, low hemoglobin levels, and use of opiates for diarrhea.
It has been shown to be useful in the treatment of mild to moderate Crohn's disease, [6] and in maintaining remission. [7] It is also effective when used in combination with antibiotics to treat active Crohn's disease. [8] Budesonide is released in the ileum and right colon, and therefore has a topical effect against disease in that area. [6]
One of the causes of abnormal bloating is excessive eating and air swallowing, known as aerophagia. [2] Other causes of bloating and distension include inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease [3] [4] and ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, functional dyspepsia, or transient constipation.
Bile acid malabsorption is common in Crohn's disease but not always recognized. Most people with previous ileal resection and chronic diarrhea will have abnormal SeHCAT tests and can benefit from bile acid sequestrants. [4] People with primary bile acid diarrhea are frequently misdiagnosed as having irritable bowel syndrome. [17]
The stomach can become bloated when too much air is swallowed during eating and drinking too quickly. As the stomach swells, belching removes the gas and alleviates the pain associated with it. Burping can also be used as a form of relief from abdominal discomfort other than too much gas in the stomach. [citation needed]
