Sabre Global Distribution System, owned by Sabre Corporation, [1] is a travel reservation system used by travel agents and companies to search, price, book, and ticket travel services provided by airlines, hotels, car rental companies, rail providers and tour operators.
Sabre Corporation was founded in 1960 by American Airlines. [4] Sabre Corporation installed the first Sabre reservation system in Briarcliff Manor, New York that year. [2] The system consisted of two IBM 7090 mainframe computers and processed 84,000 calls per day. [2] [3]
Their idea of an automated airline reservation system (ARS) resulted in a 1959 venture known as the Semi-Automatic Business Research Environment (SABRE), launched the following year. [8] By the time the network was completed in December 1964, it was the largest civil data processing system in the world.
Mid-office automation captures Passenger name record technically abbreviated as PNR data from a variety of global distribution systems (Sabre, Galileo, Amadeus, and Worldspan) sources and lets travel agencies create custom business rules to validate reservation accuracy, monitor travel policies, perform file finishing, prepare itineraries/invoices and process ticketing.
The system was pursued to develop in order to create synergies between AMR, Marriott, Hilton Hotels Corporation and Budget Rent-A-Car and fully integrate and unify the reservation systems of the companies involved. In 1988 the four large corporations made contracts to complete the system by June 1992 project at a cost of $55 million.
