Cherokee State Park was the third blacks-only state park in the United States. It was the first such state park in Kentucky, as well as the Southern United States. The park was opened in 1951 as the companion to the whites-only Kentucky Lake State Park, and it was publicized as "the finest colored vacation site in the South".
It is located prominently on the shore of Cherokee Lake, an impoundment of the Holston River, via the Cherokee Dam. The western terminus of Tennessee State Route 342 is located inside the park. The route connects the park to U.S. Route 11E (also known as Andrew Johnson Highway). The park has an area of approximately 1,444 acres (6 km 2). [1]
The Great Salt Plains Lake is located at the park and covers 9,300 acres (38 km 2) with 41 miles (66 km) of shoreline and is a shallow, salty lake with fishing opportunities for catfish, saugeye, sandbass and hybrid striper. The average depth is reportedly 4 feet (1.2 m) and the impoundment capacity is 31,420 acre-feet.

Cherokee Dam is a gravity-type concrete spillway dam consisting of nine crest gates and eight sluice gates (the latter allowing reservoir control when water level is low). [1] The combined capacity of the dam's four hydroelectric generators is 135,200 kilowatts. Cherokee Lake has a flood-storage capacity of 749,406 acre-feet (924,379,000 m 3). [3]
