The Blocksburgh post office opened in 1877. The name was changed to Blocksburg in 1893, [3] and was named for Benjamin Blockburger, a local merchant. [3] Blocksburg at one time had hotels, saloons, doctor and dentist offices, and a variety of other businesses. The town declined after the Redwood Highway bypassed it upon its completion in 1920. [2]
The American Foursquare or "Prairie Box" was a post-Victorian style, which shared many features with the Prairie architecture pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright.. During the early 1900s and 1910s, Wright even designed his own variations on the Foursquare, including the Robert M. Lamp House, "A Fireproof House for $5000", and several two-story models for American System-Built Homes.
The architecture of the early structures was fairly simple and similar to other structures of the community. As time progressed the design became much more like that of a church with staggered and multi-layer roofs. The entrance to the ritual houses had ornamental designs.

The present style of wharenui originated in the early to middle nineteenth century. The houses are often carved inside and out with stylised images of the iwi's ancestors, with the style used for the carvings varying from iwi to iwi. The houses always have names, sometimes the name of an ancestor or sometimes a figure from Māori mythology.
