Sumba (Petjo: Soemba-eiland; Indonesian: pulau Sumba), natively also spelt as Humba, Hubba, Suba, or Zuba (in Sumba languages) is an Indonesian island (part of the Lesser Sunda Archipelago group) located in the Eastern Indonesia and administratively part of the East Nusa Tenggara provincial territory.

Wainyapu, a Kodi [a] village, has some 1,400 dolmens — one of the highest concentrations on Sumba. [6] This island is the last place on Earth where some cultures still follow the traditions of the hill tribes of South-East Asia and commonly build megaliths such as dolmens for collective graves. [7]
There are also 87 species of birds protected in this region, with 7 bird taxa endemic to the island of Sumba. These are Sumba yellow-crested cockatoo, Sumba green pigeon, Sumba flycatcher, Sumba cicadabird, apricot-breasted sunbird and Sumba hornbill. 57 species of butterflies are also protected here, 7 of them are endemic to this island.

Sumba people have a rich and relatively diverse oral folklore. Preserved traditional festivals, which includes horse race, bull sacrifices, complex funerary rituals and fights with spears. Pasola is the cultural feast of the Sumba people and is considered one of Indonesia's cultural richness, which is very rare and unique to the Sumba people. [19]
The town of Waingapu is the capital of East Sumba Regency (its urban area comprises the kecamatan of Kota Waingapu and Kambera). The population of East Sumba Regency was 227,732 at the 2010 Census [ 2 ] and 244,820 at the 2020 Census; [ 3 ] the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 255,498 (comprising 131,082 males and 124,416 females).
The West Sumba Regency (following the re-organisation on 2 January 2007 which created Southwest Sumba Regency and Central Sumba Regency out of parts of West Sumba Regency) is now composed of six districts (kecamatan), whose areas (in km 2) and populations at the 2010 Census [3] and 2020 Census, [4] are listed below, together with the official estimates as at mid 2023.
