NCSSM also offers a variety of external programs focused on educating teachers and students outside of the school across North Carolina. By the mid-1980s Northern High School was one of North Carolina's largest high schools with 2,300–2,500 students and was, at this time, the largest high school in Durham County and Durham City. The school at this time only had grades 10, 11 and 12. Grade 9 was at this time located in the junior high schools along with grades 7 and 8.

Hillside High School (abbreviated HHS) is a four-year high school located in Durham, North Carolina. Hillside is one of seven high schools in the Durham Public Schools system. Of more than 300 historically black high schools that once operated in the state before desegregation, only five remain today, with Hillside being the oldest.
(Prior to that year, Durham junior highs included grades 7–9 and high schools served grades 10–12.) By the 1980s, Durham High School was no longer a majority white school. In 1992, the Durham City and County School Districts merged to become Durham Public Schools. Durham High School would close as a traditional high school in 1995.
