In 1954, Ike Turner relocated his band, the Kings of Rhythm, from Clarksdale, Mississippi to East St. Louis, Illinois. [3] There he met a man named Booker Merritt who owned a building at 1320 East Broadway. [2] Turner and his band gut renovated the building and created the Club Manhattan where they would practice and perform. [4]
Catalyst was a funk/jazz quartet from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, whose material presaged the work of later jazz fusion artists. [1] The group encountered regional success in the 1970s and have become more widely known since the re-release of their material on CD.
Jerry was born to Virgil A. Fisher and Fay Lucas 'nee. He was married to Barbara Ross (born 1944) in 1962. They divorced and he later married Melva Lee Luke (maiden; born 1947) who had graduated in 1965 from Bay High School, Bay Saint Louis. Barbara and Jerry had a son, Anthony J. (Tony) Fisher (born 1964). Melva and Jerry had no children.
Leon Thomas was born Amos Thomas, Jr. on October 4, 1937, in East St. Louis, Illinois. [2] He studied music at Tennessee State University.At the time of his studies, he had begun a singing career as a guest vocalist for the jazz bands of percussionist Armando Peraza, saxophonist Jimmy Forrest, and guitarist Grant Green.
