Danville National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery located in the city of Danville, in Vermilion County, Illinois. Administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, it encompasses 63.3 acres (25.6 ha), and as of 2014, it had 12,000 interments.
The area that is now Danville was once home to the Miami, Kickapoo, and Potawatomi tribes of Native Americans. [5] [6] Danville was founded in 1827 on 60 acres (240,000 m 2) of land donated by Guy W. Smith and 20 acres (81,000 m 2) donated by Dan W. Beckwith. [7]
Until 1988, the building housed the post office on its first floor and federal court operations on its upper two floors. After a new courthouse opened in Urbana, bankruptcy cases continued to be heard in Danville until 2013, when the building was mostly vacated. In June 2017, the federal government transferred ownership to Vermilion County. [3]
